However, technology has improved and these days the overdrive has been replaced by the 5 speed gearbox, a much more efficient transmission system. Drivers have now become accustomed to using these gearboxes in modern vehicles, leading to many classic car owners wanting to upgrade their cars with a 5 speed gearbox, improving reliability and performance.

These kits have been designed and engineered to provide these classics with improved reliability, performance and driver controls in-line with modern motoring requirements; keeping all ratios under the control of the clutch and gearlever. The conversion is aimed at those owners who are looking to upgrade from non-overdrive specification, who wish to replace worn or problematic gearbox and overdrive units, or to upgrade their car, in-line with the latest in motoring technologies.
The conversion is based on the renowned and readily available Ford Type 9 gearbox, featured in most Sierra applications. The unit is compact enough to fit neatly within the confines of the existing gearbox tunnels, with minimal modification, and is sufficiently robust to cope with most power outputs (please check with Autogear if fitting to a modified engine). It's slick gear change characteristics also make it easy to use.
Autogear kits have been developed to take the hard work out of converting to 5 speed, by providing all the components needed to carry out the conversion, including a fully reconditioned Ford Type 9 gearbox, bespoke cast alloy bell housing, mountings, all necessary hardware components and detailed fitting instructions, enabling a competent mechanic to carry out the installation. The design of the kit also allows the car to be returned to standard if required.
All reconditioning is carried out by Autogear to their exacting standards and carries a 1-year guarantee against workmanship and components. Guarantees are not held against installation and fitting work.
