We are delighted to be able to offer this new 5 speed conversion kit for the Triumph TR4-6 range.

We have developed this kit in answer to customer interest in a 5 speed conversion kit for their TRs. The kit is aimed at those TR owners who are looking to upgrade their cars from non-overdrive specification, the shortage of good old units makes it difficult to enable this conversion. Many customers also wish to replace worn or problematic gearbox and overdrive units, or to upgrade their car to a more modern transmission system with improved reliability and performance.

The kit has been developed to make the conversion as simple as possible, being based on the renowned Ford Type 9 gearbox, and using a bespoke cast alloy bell housing designed and manufactured by Autogear. As shown in picture 1, the kit contains all components needed to carry out the conversion, including; a fully reconditioned gearbox, bespoke cast alloy bell housing, clutch plate and release bearing, rear gearbox mounting bracket, a special speedo cable hardware and detailed fitting instructions. Please note that speedo recalibration may be required.

The Ford Type 9 gearbox was chosen for its availability, strength and size, being compact enough to fit within the confines of the transmission tunnel without the need for any modification to the chassis or body shell. The kit also utilizes the standard type engine back plate, clutch hydraulic system, clutch cover, cross-shaft & release bearing assembly.

Pictures 1-3 show the gearbox installed in our development TR6. As can be seen the installation does not interfere with the chassis, floor panels or bulkhead. As well as making the installation simple it also means the car can be reverted to its original gearbox if required.

The conversion also uses the standard type of transmission tunnel Once the interior trim has been re-fitted the car retains its original features and the gearlever is located in the correct position.

With a slick gear change, carefully selected gear ratios, the traditional driving feel of the car is retained; pulling smoothly through the gears and on to comfortable, relaxed cruising speeds, particularly on injected 6 cylinder models. There is also an optional quick shift gearlever, ideal for fast road and modified cars.

The gearbox also represents a considerable weight saving against the overdrive gearboxes. This may be of particular use for racing applications where regulations allow. In comparison the standard non-overdrive gearbox weighs 27.5kgs, A Type overdrive gearbox weighs 44kgs and a J Type overdrive gearbox = 43.7kgs. The Type 9 gearbox conversion weighs 37kgs.

The conversion kit is available in 3 standard specifications; for non-overdrive cars, for Laycock A Type and J Type overdrive. A closer ratio option is also available, ideal for modified engine. An optional quick shift is gearlever is also available.

The conversion kit is currently available for the TR4-6 models, our demonstrator TR6 is available for customers who would like to take a test drive, please contact us for more to arrange a visit and test drive.
